Research suggests that while nearly half of us make annual New Year’s resolutions, less than 10 percent of us will actually achieve our goals by the end of the year. Hardly encouraging to say the least. With all of the enthusiasm a new year brings, what makes it so difficult for us to stay on task?
While I’m no psychologist, I can share with you my experience as a registered dietitian working with clients to meet their health and wellness goals. Here’s what I’ve seen:
’This year I’m going to get healthy, lose weight, and save money’.
Any of that sound familiar? Ambiguous goals lead to ambiguous results. To improve your chances of success, get specific. Note the difference between saying, “I’m going to eat healthier this year’ and saying, ‘I’m going to substitute potato chips for an apple three days a week”.
I’ve seen resolution lists longer than my arm! One habit is hard enough to break much less several all at once. Prevent getting overwhelmed and giving up by staying focused on no more than two to three goals at a time. Once you have mastered those new skills, choose another three. Success is contagious and meeting your goals will inspire you to continue with your proud, new goal-changing self.
Every big goal is made up of multiple, smaller ones. The trick to staying on track is to break each of your goals down into the smallest actions possible. List out everything in detail that would need to happen to achieve each task. These smaller, more achievable goals will feel less daunting and help you stay motivated.
